Chapter Eight
Peter’s body hummed with the prospect of stretching its new legs as he got out of the car and inhaled the scent of the outdoors. The others joined him and looked around. Jarred was edible in an emerald-green pullover and jeans that hugged every inch, especially around the bulge behind his fly and the rounded perfection of his ass. Drew wore a black turtleneck and jeans, looking more casual than Peter imagined possible. He wouldn’t have guessed the man even owned a pair of jeans.
“I figured we’d be doing this in the woods off Wildwood Canyon,” Peter said, checking out the unfamiliar surroundings. “That’s where I was drawn before.”
“Which is why we don’t want to train there,” Drew replied, lifting his nose as if scenting the air. “You aren’t the only one who feels drawn to that spot.”
“Our kind lurks around Wildwood Canyon,” Jarred added as he walked up beside him. “And it’s where Isaac hangs out. That’s what you were sensing. That’s what pulled you there.”
“We don’t want to be disturbed,” Drew said, “and this is remote enough that we can do what needs to be done without drawing attention.”
“And just what will we be doing?” Peter asked, wandering closer to the nearby pine trees. The air was crisper here, in the lower reaches of the mountain range that spanned the valley where he grew up. He’d been coming up here all his life, and yet everything seemed different, new. Sights, smells, and sounds were all sharper, almost painfully clear under a bright noon sun.
“It will be to your advantage to learn more about your new capabilities before you meet Isaac again,” Drew said.
“Starting with a few facts,” Jarred added. “First of which is that all werewolves who aren’t bound in silvercore iron will change with the rise of every full moon. And they don’t change back until moonset.”
“Meaning we’ll need to coordinate our plan now,” Drew said. “Communication between us in wolf form is more instinctive and general.”
“I remember,” Peter said, laying his hand on the closest tree and marveling at the texture of the bark. Even his sense of touch was heightened now. “I could sense you when I was shifted, but I couldn’t communicate.”
“It’s easier among members of a pack,” Drew said. “But it will be a sketchier thing since you aren’t fully part of a pack yet.”
Not yet, Peter thought as he skimmed Jarred’s taut body with hungry eyes. But maybe sooner than Drew thought.
“So maybe we should challenge him before the full moon rises,” Peter said. “When we will have the advantage of a more coordinated effort.”
“Finding him before then would be tough,” Jarred said. “You won’t instinctively sense him until the full moon changes you. Then you’ll be drawn straight to his side.”
“Unless I become alpha first,” Peter said with a pointed look.
“He may well be hiding out until then,” Drew said, pushing into the woods. The others trailed after him. “He might not want to be found until he believes Peter is about to succumb to his instincts.
